Joe's Review (Redrock wilderness store, Ely, MN.)
OK - at first, I thought this was a little dopey, especially since I live the
woods and can have a crackling campfire anytime/anywhere I want. I actually hear
loons and wolves calling all day and night for about 5 months of every year and
have done so for the past 40+ years. I hear them so much that I don't even hear
them anymore unless I listen for them. Since I grew up about 300 feet away from
where I'm sitting typing this review and I'm also about about 5 miles south of
the Canadian border as the canoe floats, I've become a bit jaded with a lot of
things dubbed "wilderness" or "outdoors". Yeah, yeah , it's a crackling fire
with loons calling in the night - big whoop, eh?
But, being a fair-minded, curious individual, I thought I'd give it a shot. I
popped the Natural Elements DVD it into one of the monitors in our store and
once I figured out the DVD controls (moronic device - the DVD player - I wish
they'd bring back video players where you just push PLAY and the damn thing
plays!) I finally got it to play.
The first thing you see, (and the only thing you see all the while) is a burning
campfire in high def, up close with the logs burning and crackling. In a written
description such as this, I can hear the sounds of you the reader, starting to
yawn.
Stop yawning! I, your-humble-albeit-somewhat-jaded-reviewer, was INSTANTLY
mesmerized!!!. I could not pull away from the crackling logs and the rolling,
dancing flames. They drew me in. The calling loons and wolves in the night added
to the feel that you are not simply standing inside the comforts of your living
room. As a very scientific test, I observed other jaded-northwoods-individuals
as they walked by the monitor. Everybody stopped and watched at one point or
another. While I'm sure that some of our in-house-jaded-northwoods-individuals
would present aires of nonchalance about this DVD while in the presence of other
folks like me, they inevitably ALL stopped to stare. It's like watching a tank
full of fish - live fish. Watching the video fire is calming, and will send good
vibes to even the most been-there-done-that inhabitants of the northwoods like
pretty much everybody here at Red Rock. Something about a fire is very
comforting even if it's a video fire. Now, I find that videos of house fires
don't seem to have the same effect on most folks - unless you are a kook. For
the rest of us, the video campfire is really, quite pleasant.
I would recommend this DVD to anybody and it'll make an outstanding gift! The
recipient of said video fire will at first scoff under his/her breath while
overtly smiling & chuckling politely. Then when nothing of value is on TV or to
give the room some ambience without the mess, they will play this DVD - and play
it a lot. Heck - I even play this DVD. It's really cool in Red Rock and
EVERYBODY stops to watch while they are shopping! For a really unique, well-done
gift, this Natural Elements is just the ticket for that little something extra
gift that will actually end up being used and appreciated A LOT! -JB-
